I am currently studying for my Level 2 certificate in the Principles of Horticulture from the RHS, UK via the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh as an online qualification. This certificate is an internationally recognised qualification providing a broad-based understanding of horticultural techniques and plant biology. I am expecting it to take around a year to study the 2 units in full and take the 4 exams for each unit so a total of 8 exams to gain the full certificate.
I decided to use my time wisely now that my ‘normal’ work in the tourist industry is somewhat curtailed by Covid-19. This qualification is designed to be ideal for a career change into horticulture and perfect for the leisure gardener to expand their knowledge.
The course is made up of 2 units the first in the Principles of Plant Growth, Propagation and Development. This will cover:
- Plant classification, structure & function.
- Plant nutrition and the root environment.
- Maintaining plant health.
- Understanding plant propagation.
The second unit covers the Principles of Garden Planning, Establishment and Maintenance. This will cover:
- Understanding garden features, plant selection & planning.
- Understanding the choice, establishment & maintenance of garden plants & lawns.
- Understanding the production of outdoor vegetables & fruit.
- Understanding protected environments & their use in plant cultivation.
